(Getty Images) Dieting has become the new normal in the U.S. If you doubt this is true, just ask two American adults whether they’ve tried to lose weight in the past year. Odds are, one of them will say yes, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between 2013 and 2016, 49.1% of Americans ages 20 and up told interviewers with the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that they made an effort to shed some pounds in the previous 12 months. Some Americans were more likely to diet than others. For instance, 56.4% of women tried to lose weight, versus 41.7% of men. Age was a factor, too. Interviewers found that 52.4% of adults in their 40s and 50s had recently gone on a diet, compared with 49.7% of adults who were younger and 42.7% of adults who were older. (In every age group, women were more likely to diet than men.) Race and ethnicity mattered less. A total of 49.4% of white men and women reported a weight-loss attempt, as did 48% of black adults and 49.1% of Latino adults. Those differences weren’t large enough to be statistically significant.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell announces an arrest in the death of Anthony Avalos. (Gary Coronado / Los Angeles Times) “What you’ve heard there is not accurate based on what our detectives have seen,” McDonnell said. The autopsy has not been completed. Brandon Nichols, deputy director of DCFS , said in an interview Monday that Anthony “said he liked boys,” prompting speculation that his sexuality played a role in his death. Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Bergner said homophobia has not come up as a motive in the investigation. County officials removed eight other children — from 11 months to 12 years old — from the home as the investigation continued. They are all in the custody of DCFS. From 2013 to 2016, DCFS received a dozen reports related to Anthony that included allegations of sexual, emotional and physical abuse, as well as general neglect. The last one was two years ago. The Times reported Sunday that callers alleged that Anthony or his siblings had been denied food and water, beaten, sexually abused, dangled upside-down from a staircase, forced to crouch for hours, locked in small spaces with no access to the bathroom, and forced to eat from the trash.
